How effective are negative reps for increasing your bench press?

Kyle asked:

I heard from a source from the YMCA that negative reps can greatly improve the weight that you bench press.
Would this be worth trying, as long as I have a least two spotters on hand?
Furthermore, if this technique isn’t very effective, then could you please recommend some methods or ways to increase my bench press weight, since I have reached a plateau?

Effective, because you are training your muscles over time, not reps. The longer you can work with that resistance, the greater strength you will gain.

Hey yeah negative reps are really good for fixing those “sticky spots” you know? where you get stuck at the bottom and stuff. I do alot of things to increase my bench like sometimes lets say im repping 185 in sets of 10, i would go to a higher weight where i could only do sets of 3-5 and eventually my body would get used to it and i would be pumping sets of 8 easy. You also use your Lats alot, a huge portion of your back so work those also. Also when you are doing pushing exercises you should also work pulling (biceps) because even if you’re not pulling while benching, they stabalize for you and can help a great deal. Try doing lots of incline too and different grips like wide, narrow, etc.

Doing huge sets of clapping pushups will help you transition from the negative to positive because you get that explosive strength built up. good luck
