When doing a bench press, what position should my head be in?

Mark W asked:

I feel a little neck strain when I do a barbell bench press. I’m not using very heavy weight. I actually feel neck strain at the end of my workout and a few days after. Should I just be staring at the ceiling or should I tuck my chin into my chest a little? +any good websites for workout techniques?

You should be looking at the ceiling. Tucking your chin in cuts off your oxygen supply.

    Honest Truth About Abs

Whatever you do, you want to have your head resting on the same surface as your back. You want your head to be flat on this surface.

Your eyes should be under the bar when it is racked, and you should always have your neck relaxed. Never jerk your head up and down on a rep or anything like that.
is a good website, the founder was at a football camp I went to and was very informed on lifting techniques.

  3. Honest Truth About Abs Says:

    Firm & Flatten Your Abs

Your head should be naturally resting on the padding.. Technically trainers will tell you to pick a spot to look at (except the floor) so it tells your brain to not move your neck. So if you mean staring at the ceiling, yes, you should do that, but not so much that your neck is actually moving.

Tucking your chin is actually very bad for your neck, which is why you might be getting those pains. That’s what actually strains your neck. Having your neck tucked in like that requires you to use more of your neck/back when you’re doing bench presses than using your arms and chest.

Think of if you’re doing crunches, some people get strains in their neck because their abs are so weak that they try to bring their body up by pushing their hands around their neck, up. Thus, using more force through the neck than the abs.

    Hope this helps.

Keep your head is straight forward, eyes looking at the ceiling. You want to keep your vertebral column as flat and straight as possible. If you tilt your head in any way it could lead to strains on the neck.

Have you ever seen paramedics take people away on stretchers? If so, you know that the first thing they do is stabilize the head, which is exactly what you need to do with yours.
