I don’t really know all that much about weight lifting, but I’m assuming either that you’re right and your balance isn’t the greatest, or the muscle groups which you work bench pressing and lifting weights are different. Either way, I’m sure that if you keep working at it, you’ll be able to bench press pretty well too with a little bit of time and effort.

Maybe when you hold the barbell your hands are too close together. Doing bench press in this way takes away the chest from the exercize and involves more of the triceps. The triceps are weaker than the chest so youll be lifting less.

Different muscle groups. On the bench you are doing you chest while DB is more biceps. . . Sounds like you are doing completely different exercises.

I had the same problem, I was always use to dumbells but when I used the bench I couldn’t lift alot and it had to do with the way I was holding it and my balance. If you have bad balance, trust me you ain’t gonna lift alot with the bench. Work on your balance my friend, or get someone that has experience with benchpressing and let him help you lift the bar and slowly you’ll get better.

    Best of luck.
